Entertain kids with Laugh Out Loud Pocket Doodles books by Rob Elliott

As a mom, I try to plan ahead for times that we’ll be waiting around with kids – sitting at a sports practice with younger siblings, riding in the car for a long period, or even just waiting for dinner.

I’ve always tried to be armed with the right distractions.  When my kids were littler and I had to cart around a diaper bag all the time, I kept it stocked with entertaining little gizmos I could pull out.  After they all outgrew the diaper bag stage, I graduated to a huge purse that could hold plenty of kid stuff.

Now that my kids are older, I tell them to bring along their own distractions.  That’s fine with them, since they all want to take their tablets with them everywhere anyway.  I’m old fashioned sometimes, though, and make them take a physical book instead.

I had the opportunity recently to receive a free copy of “Laugh Out Loud Pocket Doodles for Girls” by Rob Elliott from Revell.  I thought this book would be fun for my daughter when we’re on the go – and I was right.  She loves it!

This fun little book is available at Amazon.com (affiliate link).

The book is a handy, small size to take along anywhere.  Just don’t forget a pencil, crayons, etc. for doodling, because only half the fun is reading the jokes on the pages – the other half is completing the drawings on the pages!

Each page of the book has a joke, along with an illustration by Jonny Hawkins that is only partially complete.  Kids have space to draw the rest of the illustration to add their own flair for the joke.

My 9-year-old daughter dislikes sitting through her brother’s violin lesson each week, so I slipped the book and a pencil into my purse to surprise her with it while we were waiting for him.  She liked it when I pulled the book out and read a few jokes with her, but she was even happier when I turned the book over to her to draw in it.

After we arrived home from the violin lesson, my daughter couldn’t put down the book.  She even brought it to dinner the first night!  She’s been taking this book and a pencil with her for every car ride since it arrived. She’s hooked on creating fun drawings to go along with each joke.  Luckily there are plenty of pages for her to fill.  (The pages aren’t numbered, but I learned online that there are 240 pages, to be exact.)

One of my daughter’s first drawings in her book “Laugh Out Loud Pocket Doodles for Girls.”

“Laugh Out Loud Pocket Doodles for Girls” is fun to read together.  Most of the words are easy for middle readers.  The suggested age range online is for 9-12 years old.  Some of the jokes have required a bit of explanation for my 9-year-old.  It’s been a good way to familiarize her with expressions she hadn’t learned yet, like foul play.  As in, “Why did the police arrest the chicken?”  Answer:  “Because they suspected fowl play.”

The jokes are all good clean, fun for kids.  It’s published by Revell, a Christian publisher, although the content is not specifically Christian, aside from a just few jokes that reference Christmas, Moses, and Noah’s Ark.
