Favorite online parenting resources

Parenting is a daunting task, no matter what stage you’re in with your kids. Fortunately, a lot of great, free parenting resources are available online.

These are some of my favorite resources.  Do you have other suggestions I should add?

Health & Safety

ChooseMyPlate.gov – Resources for healthy eating, including an area for kids, with games and activities to reinforce healthy food choices.

Recalls.gov – Provides links to recall information for a variety of products, including food, cars, and household goods such as toys.

CDC Parents are the Key program – A program to promote safe teen driving.

Safe Kids Worldwide – An organization focused on preventing serious injuries.  The website and social media channels highlight safety for kids, with seasonal reminders such as Halloween safety.

Kidshealth.org – A site providing information about kids’ health and development.

HealthyChildren.org – A site published by the American Academy of Pediatrics with a variety of health and safety topics.

Education

Khan Academy – A free online resource for studying a wide range of subjects, including math, science, economics, arts and humanities, and computing.  The site has interactive challenges, assessments, and videos to aid learning.

Discovery Education – This site has free resources for parents and students, including homework help and a motivation station to help parents encourage their kids.

US News Education – The U.S. News Education Rankings and Advice site covers education topics from high school to grad school.

Big Future – A college and career planning site from College Board, the nonprofit organization that administers the SAT, PSAT, AP, and other programs.

SAT – Information for college-bound students, including SAT test registration and practice resources.

The ACT – Information for college-bound students, including ACT test registration and practice resources, as well as college prep and financial planning information.

CollegeScholarships.org – A resource for finding college scholarship opportunities, as well as  topics such as writing essays and finding homework help.

College Savings Plans Network – A resource for understanding and using a state 529 plan for college savings.

Entertainment

Common Sense Media – This site allows parents to check out the content of movies, TV, books, games, apps, websites, and music.  Their reviews specify the prevalence of positive messages, as well as violence, language, and other content, along with an age rating system to help parents determine appropriate media for kids.  Users can also submit reviews that are written by parents and kids for added perspective.
